Top-Flight Hunting Newsletter

July  14, 2010

What a difference a year can make. This time last year we were in one of the worst droughts the area had seen in years. I was starting to wonder what if any cover we would have to hunt. This summer we have received frequent rain fall and everything is lush and green. In fact out here at Top-Flight we are getting ready to put cows on the pasture to hopefully manage some of the growth.

Good news for this coming season, prior to all the rainfall we did get all the pastures spayed and we should be getting a leg up on the rose hedge. A lot of projects are in the works. We are enclosing the porch, tearing down the old dog kennels and building a shed to park all four wheelers and equipment. We are putting a new coat of paint on the lodge and doing some remodel work on the inside. By the time the season rolls around we also hope to have more parking area and all the pot holes filled. Needless to say Wes is finding out what a Texas summer can be like. He does plan on taking a trip to Wisconsin to visit family in August but will be back by 1st of September. I do not know what I would do without him.

At the bird farm things are going well. At this time we have 20,000 birds on the ground or in the brooder houses. By the end of September we will have received a total of 41,500 chicks. Hope you all plan on doing a lot of shooting this coming season.

Duck Hunting

Last year the trial run on duck hunting went well. Working with another outfitter, we now have over 20 ponds and blinds available to us. The blinds are nice, well concealed, with bench seats that can comfortably accommodate 4 to 6 hunters. We are getting reports that ducks are having an above average hatch this year and that for the first time in quite a few years the snow geese have had a record hatch. We are very optimistic about the upcoming waterfowl season and should see some great hunting. Right now we are taking bookings for the upcoming early teal season and also the regular season. We limit our hunts to only 5 groups on any given morning so as not to over hunt the property. While hunting is hunting, if we do not feel we have a reasonably good chance at having a good hunt we will not take you. More information on our waterfowl hunts.

Dove Hunting

We have acquired access to several hundred acres of sesame seed and sunflower. This is in the Garwood area about 20 minutes from Top-Flight. Once again as many of you already know, if we do not have doves we will not take you.
